New deadline for Great Northern Canada Writing Contest

The deadline for the Great Northern Canada Writing Contest has been extended by one day to September 2, 2014 because the original deadline (September 1, 2014) is a holiday.

That means you have six weeks to work on your story!

To enter, submit a piece of prose, either fiction or non-fiction, of up to 1,000 words about life in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut or Nunavik. Previously published items or items that are submitted elsewhere are not eligible.

Winning entries will receive a cash prize and publication in above&beyond, Canada’s Arctic Journal.

NorthWords Executive Director

The NorthWords Writers Festival Society is seeking an Executive Director.

As the Manager of the Society, the NorthWords Executive Director is responsible for the general operation and administration of the Society, overseeing its programs, including the annual NorthWords Writers Festival, and for providing support to the Board of Directors.

The successful candidate must have superior time-management and organizational skills. The candidate must be able to work independently out of their home, using their own computer/office equipment and internet connection.

This is a part-time contract position.

Winner of the 2014 NorthWords Prize

Each year, NorthWords NWT partners with our Premier Sponsor De Beers to  award the NorthWords Prize to an outstanding book set in the Northwest Territories.  The 2014 NorthWords Prize goes to One of the most busiest posts in the North, an intimate portrayal of the heyday of Fort Fitzgerald by Fort Smith author Sandra Dolan.

The prize was presented to Sandra, and her colleague Jeri Miltenberger who worked on the book with Sandra, at the De Beers Gala Readings at the NorthWords Writers Festival in Yellowknife on June 7.

Congratulations Sandra and Jeri!

Get Ready for NorthWords 2014!

The 2014 NorthWords Writers Festival will take place June 5 – 8, 2014 in Yellowknife NT and June 5, 2014 in Fort Smith NT.  For Program Information go here.

NorthWords 2014 will explore the world of science fiction with Canada’s Premier Sci Fi Author Robert J. Sawyer who is one of only eight writers, and the only Canadian, to win all three of the world’s top awards for best science-fiction novel of the year. He will be joined Sci Fi Author and Publisher Hayden Trenholm, winner of 2008 Canadian Science Fiction Aurora Award and owner of Bundoran Press Publishing House. Sci-Fi Author Liz Westbrook-Trenholm will also appear at NorthWords 2014.

Dave Bidini, musician, author of 12 books and the only person to be nominated for a Gemini, Genie, Juno and CBC’s Canada reads will take us into the world of hockey and music.

Other NorthWords guest authors include Todd Babiak, author of five novels, including a satirical novel and, most recently, a thriller; Monique Gray Smith, acclaimed author of a fictionalized recovery memoir; and, Billeh Nickerson who has authored five collections of poetry.

Our guest authors will join NWT authors in readings, panel discussions, workshops, mentorships and open mike.

NorthWords 2014 theme is Brave New North in recognition of northern authors, both established and emerging, who are taking risks to tell the deeper stories of the North and finding new and different ways of getting those stories told.

One-on-One Online Mentorships

We still have some opening for our One-on-One Online Mentorship Program!

NorthWords One-on-One Online Mentorship Program will give writers, at any stage of their careers, an opportunity to connect with a professional author to get their writing/publishing related questions answered or to get feedback on their work.

The program which will  run to March 31, 2014 offers two types of Mentorships:

1. Talk to an Author

Participants can book an hour of email time with one of five professional mentors to discuss anything about writing, publishing, self-publishing, agents, the writing process, ideas for articles etc.

Mentors will not read you work in this type of Mentorship.

2. Get Feedback on Your WorK

Participants can submit a piece of prose of a maximum of 5,000 words or five double-spaced pages of poetry. The mentor will read your work and then spend one hour of email time with you to talk about how it can be improved.

Fees:  $20 an hour

Two-Day Creative Writing Master Class with Hayden Trenholm

SONY DSCHayden Trenholm will present a two-day Master Class on short fiction and creative non-fiction (essays and memoirs) in Yellowknife on January 18-19, 2014. The workshop will cover a number of topics through lecture and in-class writing exercises, including narrative structure, crafting effective dialogue, research for writers, and creating vivid characters.  Other topics may include: story starters, overcoming writer’s block, turning off (and on) your inner editor and tips for generating muscular prose.

Participants should bring writing material and implements (or a laptop/tablet) and a photograph they are willing to share with the group. Participants may also bring two or three pages (500 words) of something they’ve written for use (including by others) during the workshop.

HOMEWORK: Prior to the workshop, participants are asked to record and transcribe about 2 minutes of overheard conversation – at work, at home, in a restaurant or rink. Ideally, the conversationalists should be unaware of your actions. Do not edit! Leave in every repetition, hesitation and fumble. Do, however, remove or change names that might identify the speakers.

NorthWords Elects a New Board

Cara Loverock is the new President of NorthWords NWT.

Some 15 people attended the NorthWords NWT AGM on Saturday, November 16. The highlight of the occasion was the election of a new Board of Directors to serve for the next two years. Following the AGM, the new board had a short meeting to elect the Executive. The board members for 2013-2015 are:
